FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE NON PROFIT BEGINS JOURNEY

Failed aid efforts are making headlines; volunteer tourism, handouts, and unsustainable programs have, more often than not, fallen short of true impact. Onwards was born out of a desire to find better solutions to international aid, and they just may inspire your next adventure.

The organization is working to use the largest industry in the world, tourism, as a powerful tool to address global poverty. Onwards supports tourism based microenterprise development. That is, the organization provides loans, training, and revenue for businesses such as guide organizations, restaurants, small hotels, anything that can benefit from community based tourism. Then they create trips to these businesses that provide immersive travel experiences where dollars are going to support community development and ultimately help alleviate poverty.

Onwards has piloted trips to the Dominican Republic and Haiti and is currently fundraising to support more entrepreneurs and expand trip operations. Their last trip supported Raquel Hilario Santos, living in La Cumbre Dominican Republic, who started a small B&B in her community. Travelers made a unique personal connection in this home-stay like environment and spent their days jumping off waterfalls, visiting amber mines, and immersing themselves in the local culture.

SPOTLIGHT ARTICLE

Blue tarps dot the picturesque, lush mountainside of La Cumbre, Dominican Republic. They cover holes and tunnels, often over a hundred feet deep, dug by hand-tools, in search of what many of us are only familiar with from Jurassic Park: amber.

Here in La Cumbre, Raquel Hilario Santos, her seven brothers and sisters, and most families in the town rely on the industry of mining, polishing, and selling the gemstone. With the small community often receiving visitors to see the process and purchase ambar, Raquel had another vision for her future.

“My dream, since I was a girl, was to have a store and hotel. I love to meet and share with people from other cultures. The goal is to create the B&B, and maintain sustainable tourism in our community. I want to employ people who want work and to contribute to the development of our community.” (translated from Spanish)

These are the type of authentic and immersive travel destinations the new Milwaukee-based travel non profit, Onwards, takes you to. “Tourism is considered the largest transfer of resources from rich to poor. When done in a way that supports local small businesses, tourism can truly transform the lives of families in developing countries.” states Onwards founder Jacob Taddy. “The new generation of travelers is seeking these type of immersive travel experiences in communities like La Cumbre. However, the communities are often hard to find, the businesses may not exist or be equipped to host travelers,  and it can be difficult to know your money is going to a good place. We created Onwards to bridge these gaps and use travel for social good.”

Onwards supports tourism based microenterprise development. That is, the organization provides loans, training, and revenue for businesses such as guide organizations, restaurants, small hotels, anything that can benefit from community based tourism. Then, they create trips to these businesses that provide immersive travel experiences where dollars are going to support community development and ultimately help alleviate poverty.

Raquel received a $950 loan to turn a cinderblock structure into La Cumbre’s first bed and breakfast. With the loan she hired local labor to repair the roof, purchase beds/sheets/towels, and put in the first running water bathroom for the B&B and for her family. Raquel then gradually pays off the loan through revenue provided by Onwards trips.

Onwards has piloted trips to the Dominican Republic and Haiti and is currently fundraising to support more entrepreneurs and expand trip operations.
