Haiti – Dominican Republic

Explore both the Dominican Republic and Haiti on this unique trip that challenges preconceptions, crosses borders, and helps local economies.

As an alternative to the often un-impactful ‘volun-tourism,’ explore current organizations and models of community development at work in the DR and Haiti. This is an impactful week of community exposure, organization site visits, evaluation, learning opportunities, and discussion about “What is community development?” and “What does success look like?”

Come see local community development organizations in action working in micro-enterprise development, sustainable agriculture, poverty alleviation, housing, and more. Paired with these opportunities are, of course, community based tourism to see some of the best hidden gems the DR and Haiti have to offer. Reside in bungalos, home-stays, and on the beach. Activities include organization site visits, horseback, coffee, and organic farm tours, waterfall hikes, and a trip that will truly stimulate your mind and body.

Community Development Ed-ventures

Itinerary
  • Rio Limpio - Community Stay - 3 Nights

Visit the off the grid “campo” town of Rio Limpio, which was the inspiration for Onwards. The agriculture based community is home to the Dominican Republic’s first organic agriculture school, CREAR, a large greenhouse project, a coffee coop, artisans, and various community development projects.

  • Dajabon Border Community - 1 Night

The border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti opens at Dajabon for trade between the countries every Monday and Friday. The market is a fascinating display of the commerce of the island and where we will begin discussing the dynamic history, culture, and relations between the two countries. Lodging is in a local guesthouse that provides support to a group home for orphaned Haitian boys.

  • Milot, Haiti - 2 Nights

Milot, Haiti has a rich history settled at the base of the Sans-Souci Palace and near The Citadelle Laferrière. From this base, visit local job-creation projects, community organizations, learn about the Voodoo tradition, and the historical forts atop nearby mountains. Lodging in Milot is with Haitian families in guesthouses (or an option at a small hotel).

  • Cap Haitien, Haiti - Beach Stay - 2 Nights

Spend two days relaxing on the gorgeous beaches of Haiti, participate in a snorkel excursion (additional ocean excursions are available, if desired), and spend some time reflecting on your impact-driven travel of the previous week.
