Onwards Traveler Testimonials
"I've done a ton of traveling; but never have I felt quite so...copacetic and content as during the homestay. I mean - it really felt like a home. We were part of Raquel's family for the evening and I loved it."
"I've never traveled and stayed at all-inclusive resorts, and after a previous trip to Jamaica and this trip to the DR, I can't imagine ever staying at a resort. I want all my future vacations to be like this one with Onwards! Learning and experiencing a new country and culture, especially a developing country that changes my perspective and makes me grateful for the opportunities I've had in life, and makes me reevaluate how I'm living my life and what I can do to give back to others. I can't wait to take another Onwards trip!"
"This trip was a giant breathe of fresh air. I feel reinvigorated by my deeply seeded passion for travel and meeting people unlike myself. Our home-stay was with Raquel, who made me (momentarily) forget the language gap, that I was a tourist without a clue, or that I was surrounded by a group of strangers who I had formed incredible bonds with in the course of three days. She was kind and welcoming and just so, so alive. Upon arriving, she made us the single greatest cup of hot chocolate I have ever tasted in my life."
"Doing the home stay gave a glimpse of what daily life is like for a Dominican family. I feel that it got us to get to know a family very well very quickly. Experiences like this allow people to connect with other people outside of their social circles. It allows people to realize that people are pretty much the same no matter what they do, where they grow up, or how they live."
"Riding on a bus that drives past Dominican houses is not nearly the same as having the chance to see and stay in such a home. It offers a unique way to share in Dominican culture. Going on the trip has helped make me more conscious of how the way in which I travel affects the communities I visit. The concept of microfinance is something I've been exposed to in my university courses, but to have the opportunity to see how that impacts a family is something I never would have experienced without Onwards."
"I am impressed with how well the trip was organized. We were able to see things that otherwise we would not know about, eat food at various restaurants or at the eco lodge, and have time to relax after a long day. The most memorable parts of the experience included getting a Dominican hair cut, riding a moto with the store owner to his house to meet his family, learning the background of the musical style merengue, and staying with local BnB owners Tony and Raquel. It was a powerful experience because we got to meet the families that our money is going to."
